What is the difference between the Frejka pillow and Marwell pants?

The Frejka pillow was one of the most important inventions in the field of pediatric orthopedics. Originally, it was an abduction pillow filled with down feathers, which provided sufficient abduction. It was innovated several times and the down filling was replaced with firmer foam and eventually felt. Unfortunately, that is why the pillow was relatively impractical, too thick from front to back with Velcro fasteners that were for the most part sewn on in the wrong direction. The main shortcoming is too high a layer on the back, which positions newborns and infants almost permanently with an extremely arched back. This position reduces initial locomotive development, mainly the physiological dorsal and neck reflexes.

All these shortcomings have been eliminated with the Marwell abduction bandage, which allows for a correct physiological position of newborns and infants while maintaining the full therapeutic effect.

Do Marwell abduction pants replace the use of three bulky cotton diapers?

The pants fully replace the former system that uses three bulky cloth diapers to prevent the development of congenital hip dysplasia.

What does it mean when a product is clinically tested?

A clinical evaluation of a medical device is a process that aims to critically evaluate clinical data and demonstrate the safety and efficiency of the evaluated medical device subject in compliance with the intended purpose as defined by the manufacturer and under normal conditions of use.

A clinical trial means using the medical device on trial subjects within a process of systematic testing on the premises of a healthcare provider with the objective to:

  • Demonstrate whether the tested medical device is suitable for use in accordance with the intended purpose, particularly from the standpoints of safety and effectiveness,
  • Determine the impact of the tested medical device on the trial subject, and
  • Specify side effects of the tested medical device and evaluate whether they represent an acceptable risk.

A clinical test means that the medical device is used on subjects.

It is essential to distinguish between the opinion of a physician and a clinical evaluation.

A clinical evaluation of a medical device is a relatively demanding process in terms of both time and expense, which is governed by the applicable provisions of Act no. 268/2014 Coll. on medical devices.
The Ministry of Health even issued an instruction that defines a list of hospitals allowed to carry out clinical evaluations and at the same time also stipulates the minimum period of time during which the tested product must be monitored.

What kind of diapers can I use with MARWELL abduction pants?

It is possible to wear MARWELL abduction pants over regular absorption diapers or classic cloth diapers.

What makes MARWELL abduction pants different from other orthopedic aids on the market?

MARWELL abduction pants are unique due to their PU-foam insert with memory effect which applies optimal pressure on the baby’s legs and does not change its shape even when used daily. The width of the insert was consulted with leading orthopedists. MARWELL pants are made of 100% cotton and are not uncomfortably tight. Compared to other existing aids on the market, MARWELL pants use a substantially smaller volume of abduction wrapping.

How do I select the right size of pants?

In general the pant sizes are divided by age, babies up to the age of 3 months (size 52) and subsequently from 3 to 6 months (size 58). The width of the orthopedic insert itself (between the legs, without pants and clothing of the baby) is approx. 17 cm for size 52 and 19 cm for size 58. The size or weight of the baby are not the main issue, but instead the space between the legs and circumference of the stomach area are key so that the pants remain in place. Of course, every baby is a bit different, so an individual approach is really essential. For size 52 the internal circumference of the pants, i.e. the circumference of the baby’s stomach area of the baby, is approx. 44 cm, while certain adjustments (either tightening or loosening) can be made using the Velcro fasteners (+/- approx. 2 to 4 cm). Therefore, if your baby fits into this dimensional tolerance (circumference around the stomach area), it is better to select size 52. However, if you measure a larger circumference around the stomach area (or borderline), it will probably be better to select size 58.

What ages of children are MARWELL abduction pants intended for?

MARWELL abduction pants are manufactured in two sizes, which cover the growth period from birth and throughout the period during which abduction wrapping is necessary. Size 52 is intended for children up to three months of age, while size 58 is for children from three to six months.

The width of the orthopedic insert between the legs of the child is 17 cm for size 52 and 19 cm for size 58.
